From its inception three years ago, Rosie Lee has branded, shaped and helped grow the urban running community Run Dem Crew. Our latest work - a book named after the ‘Away! Away! Away!’ that members shout as they set out on a run – is designed to celebrate and raise awareness of the Crew and its activities.
Compiled of six zine-style photo essays, the book documents one of the Crew’s biggest challenges yet - the 2011 London Marathon.
To capture both individual personalities and the energy and culture of the Crew as a whole, we employed photographer Tom Hull to follow key members in the months leading up to the marathon. Each member also contributed their own copy, edited by Ben Myers.
Keeping the book true to the Crew's grassroots, we opted for an energetic, loose look and feel that utilised the vivid colour range of Ditto Press’s Risograph printer. For finish, the six chapters were individually sewn together using an exposed bind.
The result is a frenetic, unselfconscious, heartfelt book that's unashamedly Run Dem Crew.
