Brief— A mailer that showcases a range of Arjowiggins’ ‘Curious collection’ papers. It was to be sent to several design studios throughout Europe and so had to have international appeal and not be specific to one culture or language. Solution— Taking letters from the word ‘Curious’, I designed a series of interesting and unusual letterforms in equally interesting and unusual print techniques of a range of paper stocks. Two illustrators were also used: Si Scott was commissioned to design a question mark and the skeletal ‘O’ was sourced from an alphabet designed by Björn Johansson. Each letter was printed on a card of its own and these sat inside a slipcase with an information card. The print processes used were: ? — Silk-screened in a gloss black ink C — A laser-cut halftone screen U — A multi level blind emboss on waxy, tactile paper R — A holographic foil I — 3 fluorescent pantones O — UV ink on translucent paper U — Thermochromic (heat sensitive, colour-changing) ink S — A tinted UV varnish | Awards & Press— • Featured in Design Week • Featured in Computer Arts — Completed under creative direction at / intellectual property of Blast ‘?’ illustration by Si Scott (www.siscottstudio.com) ‘O’ illustration by Björn Johansson (www.solution.se) |
